Hector Caffieri (British, 1847-1932)

Cattle in a meadow, signed ‘H Caffieri’ (lower right). Watercolour.
Approximate size: 21.5 x 29 cm.

British artist Hector Caffieri devoted his career to atmospheric scenes of seaside revelry. Splitting his time between London and the coastal city of Boulogne-Sur-Mer in Northern France, Caffieri produced popular images with stunning individuality.

Caffieri’s style, developed in a self-consciously artistic direction. His loose, painterly technique often combined watercolour and dilute bodycolour in a highly decorative manner. He favoured pleasing and sublime compositions with the masts and rigging of fishing boats silhouetted against misty skies, the washes merging softly one into the other, avoiding the dissonance of hard edges. He habitually used a palette of pale greys, ochres, yellows, blues (mostly for clothing) and reds, manipulating the fluid pigment to create diffuse, blurred effects and superb manifestations of atmosphere and mood.
